why i don't "stand up if you hate tottenham"
On the eve of our game away to Tottenham, I have a confession to make. I don't stand up when I hear renditions of the song "stand up if you hate tottenham".
Why, I hear you shriek, as an Arsenal fan do I not bother? Well, the reason is quite simple.
I just couldn't care less. I gave up thinking of Tottenham in the context of them challenging us for anything quite a while ago.
Tottenham are a £70 million team of fantastic footballers whose sum is less than the value of their parts.
Plus they're led by (in my opinion) an average manager in Martin Jol. Unfortunately for them, I don't think their problems will go away even if they changed managers.
Tottenham's problems go all the way to the top. First, they need to decide where their principles lie - a little bit like when a company fashions a vision statement to use as a guiding light. Then they ought to find a really good manager, tell him about their vision, and give him the power and the means to execute the plan - starting with the abilty to sign his own players and staff. Something which apparently due to their organisational structure, Martin Jol doesn't have the power to do.
In addition, they're apparently all obsessed with being like Arsenal - from the tea lady all the way up to the Chairman. Rather than continuously gunning to be like the Gunners, they're better off playing their own game. It's never gonna happen, they're never gonna be like the Arsenal - they're better off figuring out a way to become their own team.
Only then might I "stand up if you hate Tottenham".
Until then, that team is just not worth the effort.
